NTA Announces UGC NET June 2026 Retest for English, Commerce & Sociology

The National Testing Agency (NTA) issued an official notification confirming a mandatory re-examination for the UGC NET June 2026 cycle for three specific subjects: English, Commerce, and Sociology.

This decision follows an expert committee review of the June 22–30 examinations, which identified extensive factual, typographical, and translation errors alongside repeated questions in these three papers. The NTA stated that these defects could not be resolved simply by dropping questions, making a complete retest necessary to uphold exam fairness.

Official UGC NET Retest Schedule & Timings

The UGC NET re-exam will be conducted over two days in September 2026. Candidates who appeared for these papers in the original June cycle will not be required to pay any additional examination fees or submit new applications.

  • English: September 9, 2026 — Shift 1 (9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon)
  • Commerce: September 9, 2026 — Shift 2 (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM)
  • Sociology: September 10, 2026 — Shift 1 (9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon)

Why is the UGC NET Re-Exam Happening?

The NTA ordered the re-test following numerous complaints from candidates regarding the substandard quality of the question papers. The expert audit identified multiple critical flaws, including:

  • Factual & Typographical Errors: Misspelled names of prominent scholars (e.g., "Putzer" instead of "Ritzer" and "Nusbaut" instead of "Nussbaum" in Sociology) and garbled book titles.
  • Language & Formatting Issues: Poorly worded questions, severe grammatical mistakes, punctuation errors, and gender/number agreement issues.
  • Translation Inconsistencies: The use of non-standard, newly coined terms for well-established academic concepts.
  • Repeated Questions: A significantly high number of questions in the English paper were directly copied from previous years' examinations.

Admit Card and Exam Center Details

The NTA has stated that details regarding the examination city, exam centers, and fresh admit cards will be notified separately on the official website (ugcnet.nta.nic.in). Advance city intimation slips are typically released a week before the exam date, followed by admit cards 3 to 4 days prior.

Impact on Other Subjects and Qualifications

For candidates who appeared in any of the remaining 84 subjects, the process remains unaffected.

  • Results on Schedule: Declaration of results, allocation of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), and eligibility certificates for Assistant Professor and PhD admissions will proceed without delay for the other 84 subjects.
  • Qualification Criteria for Retest Subjects: The qualifying number for Assistant Professor eligibility in English, Commerce, and Sociology will be equal to 6% of the candidates who appeared in either the original June examination or the September retest—whichever number is higher.
